Markets: what differs by country
Which country-specific rules Assetli knows, for which countries they are verified, what decides which market applies, and where the app deliberately says nothing.
Last updated: September 16, 2026
Language, currency and market are three independent settings. This page is about the third one: the country whose rules apply to a given piece of data. The rule the app follows everywhere is that a wrong national rule is worse than none, so where a market is not verified the app shows the gap instead of the Czech default.
What decides the market
| Feature | Market taken from |
|---|---|
| Holding-period test for stocks and crypto | Your market in Settings (tax residence) |
| Holding-period test for a property | The country of the property’s address |
| Energy price watch, utility prices | The country of the property |
| Statement import | The bank you choose |
| Fuel and electricity prices in the vehicle calculator | Your market in Settings |
| Property check registers | The country of the listing |
Holding-period tests for investments
The app tracks how long you have held a position against the test of your market and shows the threshold with a link to the authority. It never computes tax amounts outside the Czech market. Three states exist: tracked (the rule is verified and followed), none (verified that no test exists), unknown (no verified data, nothing is claimed).
| Market | Stocks and ETFs | Crypto |
|---|---|---|
| Czech Republic | 3 years, plus an annual exemption limit; potential tax shown | 3 years |
| Slovakia | 1 year | 1 year, after which a lower rate applies rather than an exemption |
| Germany | none: a flat withholding tax applies since 2009 | 1 year |
| Austria | none | none |
| France | none | none |
| Poland | none | none |
| Spain, Italy, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland | unknown | unknown |
Each rule carries the date it was last verified and the source it comes from; both are shown in the app.
Holding-period tests for property
A bare holding period is only half of the rule for a home: in most of these markets an exception for a property you lived in overrides it. The app applies the exception where the rule is verified.
| Market | Period | Own-residence exception |
|---|---|---|
| Czech Republic | 5 years; 10 years for purchases from 2021 | yes |
| Slovakia | 5 years | not in the registry, so not applied |
| Germany | 10 years | yes |
| Austria | no fixed period; the main-residence exemption decides | yes |
| France | 22 years for income tax, 30 years for social levies | yes |
| Poland | 5 years | not in the registry, so not applied |
Energy price watch
Official price lists are collected and the comparison against your contract is switched on per market.
| Market | Comparison |
|---|---|
| Czech Republic | live |
| France | live |
| United Kingdom | live |
| Germany | live |
| Italy | live |
| Spain | live |
| Poland | data collected, comparison not yet on |
Statement formats by country
Czech banks: dedicated CSV parsers for Air Bank, Raiffeisenbank and UniCredit, and camt.053 for ČSOB, Komerční banka and Česká spořitelna. Slovakia, Germany, Austria, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and Italy: camt.053. United Kingdom, United States and Canada: OFX. Poland: smart CSV detection. Any other bank: smart detection or manual mapping. Details in Importing data.
Currency
Each market suggests a currency (CZK, EUR, PLN, GBP, CHF), but the display currency is your choice in Settings and every record keeps the currency it was entered in.
What Assetli never does
- Never applies a Czech rule to a foreign address or portfolio because the market is unknown.
- Never computes tax amounts, rates or contributions outside the Czech market.
- Never states a legal conclusion; it shows the threshold, the source and the date, and links to the authority.
